ADA & AccessABILITY
Practical Guide to
The Americans with Disabilities Act

Please Note

This handbook provides general guidelines for employers regarding their responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and focuses primarily on Title I of the ADA, related to employment practices. For purposes of brevity and clarity, some legal concepts are presented in plain English rather than in strictly legal terminology.

The ADA has been amended several times since its passage in 1990 and is undergoing continuous interpretation in the court systems. For the most up-to-date information, please contact one of the ADA resources listed at the end of this document.

The information included in this handbook was obtained from the following sources:

  • United States Department of Justice
  • United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
  • President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities
  • California Department of Rehabilitation
  • Pacific Disability & Business Technical Assistance Center

Links to the above web sites are provided at the end of this handbook.

Important Update!  As of January, 2001 a new California state law (FEHA A.B. 2222) went into effect that goes beyond the federal ADA provisions in several areas. Click here for a comparison of the ADA and FEHA
